This fixture was designed to test the initial prototype design for a 4,000 lb class push/pull actuator. While prior testing for unidirectional cylinders had been done mainly with weights, this fixture was designed to easily apply varied load in either direction using a combination of flywheel inertia and an eddy current brake
My role:
Led project with 2 other engineers
Led system level design, engineered dynamic performance to test desired speed, force, and acceleration ranges within a limited stroke length
Sizing and selection for major mechanical components (flywheel, chain reduction, gearbox, bearings, eddy current brake, etc.)
Detailed mechanical design, stress analysis, and drawing creation for machined and bent sheet metal parts
Assembly and integration
Results:
The test station was used to assess efficiency and performance metrics for the prototype, then transitioned to accelerated life testing
portfolio in progress, more to come!
